Every year in the UK around 600 babies are diagnosed with only half a functioning
heart.
A decade ago, most of these children would have died. Today, life-saving surgery
can give these children a chance, although their hearts will never function normally
and many will still need a heart transplant in early adulthood.
Sadly, some don't survive. However the children learn to live rewarding lives within
the physical restrictions that their condition brings.
Formed in 1994, Little Hearts Matter is a national charity working for the families
where a 'single ventricle heart condition' (half a working heart) has been diagnosed.
Unlike many other congenital heart defects, these conditions cannot be corrected
- they can only be palliated - so the children's hearts will never function normally.
These children's hearts may be smaller than normal, but Little Hearts Matter believes
they should be given every chance of a happy and fulfilling life.
